The British Journal of Photography reviews Yophoto

Tim Daly at The British Journal of Photography writes a tips and review article on photobook design and production. Below is an extract from his article with his verdict on Yophoto.

Picture book stories

Compared to colour managed inkjet printing, photobook design and production is largely a hit-and-miss affair. Tim Daly outlines how to ensure your final photobook is as good as it looks on screen.

UK-based services

A good UK photobook service is offered by Yophoto. Based in Tunbridge Wells, Yophoto offers a high quality alternative format using touchy-feely linen covers rather than dust jackets or laminated papers. A Yophoto photobook looks and feels very much like a hand-bound book, but offers all the advantages of digital production.

Like other photobook service providers, Yophoto provides a Windows-only photobook design application free to download from their website. Mac users can also submit their photobook designs as a press-quality PDF on disk, either using Quark or InDesign to make initial layouts, although there is a one-off £25 supplement for doing this, As of writing, Yophoto is currently updating its free template application to make it more user friendly. Although there's no profile for users to soft-proof with, my own Yophoto photobook was prepared with a generic HP Indigo 5000 profile and the results were very impressive indeed.
